Brenna Diggins and Tara Berger helped lead the Wesleyan women's basketball to a 61-60 victory Saturday afternoon in the Swarthmore Tip-Off Classic against Randolph-Macon.
The Cardinals took an early 4-0 deficit before Randolph-Macon was able to tie it at 4-all. The score was tied at 8-8 before the Cardinals went on an 8-0 run to hold a 16-8 advantage. Wesleyan expanded its lead to 10 points with a pair of free throws and a layup to start to the second quarter. The Cardinals scored the next six points to hold an 11-point advantage at 29-18. Randolph-Macon used a 5-0 spurt to pull within six points, but the Cardinals expanded their lead back to 10-points, 33-23. Weselyan would head to the locker room with a 33-27 lead at halftime.
Randolph-Macon was able to cut the Wesleyan lead to four points early in the third quarter before Wesleyan used a 6-0 spurt to extend its lead back to 10-points. Wesleyan held a 45-36 advantage with 4:04 to play. Diggins was able to net seven points in the quarter which helped give Wesleyan a 53-48 lead at the end of the third.
Randolph-Macon erased Wesleyan's lead in the fourth quarter, and the two teams went back-and-forth as the game came down to the wire. Hannah Livermon scored on a fast-break followed by a layup to bring Randolph-Macon within one-point at 53-52. The Cardinals tallied the next two layups before Livermon nailed a three-pointer to make the score 56-55. Katie Anderson scored a layup with 3:52 remaining to give R-MC a 57-56 advantage. The Cardinals tallied the next four points withbaskets by Maeve Vitale and some clutch free throws by Berger to maintain a 60-57 lead. Khajae Hester was fouled on back-to-back possessions for Randolph-Macon and tied the score at 60-60 with under a minute to play. Vitale was then fouled with 22 seconds remaining, and she nailed one free throw to give Wesleyan the 61-60 win.
Vitale finished the game with eight points, and Danielle Gervacio also played a great game, finishing with ten points, four rebounds and three assists.
