Middletown, Conn. - The Men's Ice Hockey team played host to the Hobart Statesman, and were defeated in a close battle, 3-2. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 0-3-4, while Hobart improves to 8-2-1 on the year.
Hobart opened the scoring with a power play goal with 9:06 gone by in the first. The goal was scored by Junior Nick Bingaman and assisted by fellow juniors Carl Belizario and Bobby Sokol. The goal was Bingaman's third on the year. Wesleyan answered less than a minute later, breaking through with a power play goal of their own scored by Senior Alex Carlacci. His goal was assisted by Sophmore Dylan Holze. The goal was Carlacci's second on the year. Hobart scored yet again on the power play with a goal by Sophmore Tyler Wolf, his second on the year. The goal was assisted by Bingaman and Freshman Matt Pizzo. Junior Dan Weiss, starting in net for Wesleyan, made nine first period saves, while his counterpart, Senior Lino Chimienti made 13. Hobart went into the second with a one goal advantage at 1-2.
Wesleyan was able to get even in the second period as they evened the score up at two with an unassisted goal by Senior Jaren Taenaka, his first on the year. The Cardinals were also able to kill off two Hobart power play opportunities. For the day the Wesleyan penalty kill was 5-7, while their power play was 1-3.
Hobart would reclaim the lead in the third period on an unassisted goal by Freshman Cam Shaheen. That goal would prove to be the difference as Hobart would go onto win 2-3.
For the day, Weiss made 36 saves while Chimienti also made 36.
The Cardinals will not return to action until 2016 when they play Norwich University on January 2nd at the Norwich Tournament. The puck will drop at 7 p.m.
