The Wesleyan University Men's Ice Hockey team battled back from 2-0 deficit in the third period to tie Little Three Rival Amherst 2-2 Saturday Night.
The first period ended scoreless with Amherst holding a one shot (8 to 7) advantage.
Wesleyan went on the power play 2:51 into the second, but was unable to capitalize on the advantage. Amherst scored first in the second period at the 17:09 mark when defenseman Kevin Ryder's point shot found the back of the net. Wesleyan took the next three penalties: Senior Terrence Durkin for tripping, freshman Vincent Lima hitting from behind, and Luke Babcock for hooking at the end of the period. Wesleyan was able to kill off all 3 penalties and remained down one going into the third period.
Amherst held a 9-5 shot advantage for the period. Wesleyan came on strong in the third, but Andy Espinoza was called for roughing half way thru the 3rd and Amherst was able to capitalize on the Power Play. David White's point shot was blocked by Senior Jay Matthews and the puck landed on Amherst's Patrick Mooney stick, who beat Dawson Sprigings to make it 2-0. The Cardinals continued to pressure Amherst and capitalized with under 10 minutes to play when freshman Chad Malinowski ripped a shot passed Dave Cunningham to get the Cardinals back within one. The goal was assisted by senior Terrence Durkin and Junior Quincy Oujevolk. Wesleyan continued to pressure Amherst holding a 14-1 shot advantage in the period. With the Wesleyan goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Senior Jay Matthews scored the equalizer with 15 seconds remaining.
Wesleyan created a few scoring chances in the OT holding a 4-2 shot advantage, but the game remained tied. The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow when they visit Hamilton at 3 p.m.
