Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Jack Katkavich '16 Makes 6 Saves to Shutout #12 Tufts in Scoreless Deadlock

Goalie Matt Katkavich '17 made six saves to post his second shutout of the year and extend his streak of consecutive shutout minutes to 270:45 as Wesleyan played to a 0-0 draw with #12-ranked Tufts in a NESCAC game Tues., Sept. 29.

With most of the play in the midfield, the two teams played a scoreless first half. Each team managed just three shots. There weren't many quality scoring chances in the half, but Tufts did have a goal waived off with 18:10 to go when the play was called offside and Wesleyan's Brandon Sousa '16 rang a shot off the crossbar-upright juncture early in the period. Wesleyan had the only two corner kicks of the half, but neither resulted in a shot.

The Jumbos nearly took the lead just three minutes into the second half on a blast that seemed ticketed for the top left corner of the net, but Katkavich made a dive to tip it wide.

Just two minutes later, the Cardinals' Adam Cowie-Haskell '18 fired a shot from the top of the box that hit the crossbar squarely.

With 30 minutes remaining, the Jumbos had a breakaway chance, but Katkavich made a diving save to his left to preserve the tie.

Tufts had another chance with 18:20 left with Katkavich out of the net, but the Jumbo missed a wide open net, hitting the post.

At the end of regulation the Cardinals had outshot Tufts, 7-6.

Midway through the overtime, Cowie-Haskell had another chance with an open net and missed the shot wide right. The Jumbos had one last gasp in the final 10 seconds, but a shot from the top of the box  went wide.

The Cardinals outshot Tufts, 14-11, for the game.

Ahead for Wesleyan is a visit to NESCAC rival Hamilton Sat., Oct. 3. The game will be webcast.
