Cardinals Use Two First Period Goals to Defeat Sacred Heart, 2-1

SHELTON, Conn. - A two goal first period propelled the Wesleyan University women's ice hockey team to a  2-1 victory over Sacred Heart Tuesday night on the road, as junior Ellery Sarosi's first period score proved to be the game winner for the Cardinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • All three scores occurred in the first period. 
  • Wesleyan goaltender Laura Corcoran '16 made 31 saves in net.
  • Sacred Heart goaltender Nicole Magee made 22 saves between the pipes.
  • The Pioneers outshot the Cardinals, 32-24.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wesleyan opened the scoring early with a Grace Keogh '19 goal off a Jess Brennan '17 pass with 1:27 gone by in the first.
  • Sacred Heart evened the score with a power play goal from Brittany Smith off a Cassandra Hanlon pass.
  • However, the Cardinals reclaimed the lead on Sarosi's game-winning goal with 15:03 elapsed in the period. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  •  With the victory, Wesleyan ended its three game losing streak.
  •  This is the Cardinals' 10th victory over the Pioneers.

  • Wesleyan returns to the ice Friday Jan. 22 for a home game against Hamilton, which is slated to start at 7 p.m.
