Men's Ice Hockey Scores Five Goals as They Defeat Conn 5-2

NEW LONDON, Conn.- The Cardinals offense came alive as they scored five goals en route to a 5-2 victory over Conn College on the road Friday night. James Kline '17 scored two goals, while Andy Espinoza '19 and senior captain Eric Casey each contributed two assists a piece for the victorious Cardinals.

  • Conn: 3-10-2, 0–7-2 NESCAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cardinals special teams played a big part in the victory, scoring two power play goals and a short-handed goal. They also held Conn without a power play goal in three opportunities.
  • Wesleyan had four different goal scorers and ten different players register a point. 
  • Cardinals goaltender Dawson Sprigings, '17, made 24 saves on the evening.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Quincy Oujevolk '17 got the scoring started early for the Cardinals as his goal with :58 seconds gone by gave Wesleyan an early 1-0 advantage. His goal was assisted by Terence Durkin '16
  • The Camels tied the game with :49 seconds gone by in the second on a goal by Tim DiPretoro, which was assisted by Joe Birmingham and Joe Giordano.
  • Wesleyan came right back thanks to a Kline goal at 1:40 which was assisted by Casey and Espinoza.
  • Later in the second on a Cardinals' power-play, senior Jay Matthews would scored what proved to be the deciding goal. His goal was assisted by Espinoza and senior Alex Carlacci.
  • Wesleyan's penalty kill got into the action with a short-handed goal at the 4:08 mark in the third period as senior Jaren Taenaka scored his second goal of the season. His goal was assisted by Casey and sophomore Jordan Jancze.
  • Conn's penalty kill also got in on the scoring as Jon Paris scored with 8:36 gone by in the third to cut the Cardinals lead to 4-2.
  • Kline would add an insurance goal, his tenth on the year, for the Cardinals in the third on the power-play. The goal was scored at 12:53 and was assisted by freshman Mike Yablong.
