Women's Basketball Falls to No. 24 Conn. College, 71-61

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Kaylie Williams '16 recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but the Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to Connecticut College on the road Saturday afternoon, 71-61.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cardinals held a 19-7 advantage in points off turnovers after forcing 20, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Camels.
  • Williams was joined in double figures by Maddie Bledsoe '18, who added 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while Maeve Vitale '18 filled up the stat sheet. She finished with game-highs of five assists and six steals, while also scoring six points and grabbing eight boards.
  • Five different players scored in double-figures for Conn. College as Willa McKinley posted a game-high 17 points. Natalia Baum and Mairead Hynes each added 11, and Payton Ouimette and Kylie Caouette scored 10 apiece. Caroline Pangallo registered a team-high four assists and Meg Corcoran pulled in a game-high nine rebounds.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Camels opened the game on a 6-0 run.
  • Tara Berger '19 ended the stretch with a lay-up at the 4:47 mark, and back-to-back three-pointers from Vitale and Chynna Bailey '19 put the Cardinals ahead, 8-6.
  • Conn. College eventually claimed an 11-10 lead after the first quarter.
  • The Camels held a lead until the 4:37 mark of the second when a lay-up by Bledsoe put Wesleyan up 18-17.
  • Seconds later, Olivia Gorman '19 hit one from downtown, and Kadijah Mathews '18 then made a lay-up with 2:57 to play before the break as Wesleyan went ahead by four (23-19).
  • However, Conn. College scored eight unanswered in the closing minutes to claim a 27-23 lead at halftime.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Camels took their first double-digit lead of the game at the 5:17 mark of the third quarter following a three-pointer by McKinley.
  • However, Wesleyan went on a run in the closing minutes and outscored the Camels, 11-5 in the final 4:09 of the third. A lay-up by Danielle Gervacio '17 cut the deficit to five as the Cardinals entered the fourth quarter down, 46-41.
  • Wesleyan continued to increase its run and got within two after a three-pointer by Williams (48-46), but it proved to be the closest the Cardinals would get the rest of the way.
  • Conn. College hit its free throws to pull away down the stretch as it held on for the 71-61 win.

UP NEXT

  • Wesleyan returns to play Friday, Feb. 5 and heads to Little Three rival Williams for a 7 p.m. contest.
  • The Camels are back in action Tuesday, Feb. 2 and will host non-conference foe Eastern Connecticut at 7:30 p.m.
