Taenaka's Late Third Period Goal Lifts the Cardinals Over Amherst, 3-2

MIDDLETOWN, Conn.- The Wesleyan University men's ice hockey team was able to edge out Amherst College 3-2 thanks to a late third period goal by Jaren Taenaka '16.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wesleyan was able to get a key power play goal early in the game to give them an early 1-0 lead.
  • Cardinals net minder, Dawson Sprigings '17 made 21 saves between the pipes.
  • Jack Fitzgerald scored both Amherst goals.
  • Wesleyan was able to get a late third period goal by Taenaka to give them the 3-2 victory.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Cardinals scored first on the power play with a goal by Chad Malinowski '19 at 13:28 in the first. The goal came off of passes by fellow freshmen Andy Espinoza and Vincent Lima.
  • Amherst came right back a minute later to tie the game at one as Fitzgerald got one over the glove hand of Sprigings. Fitzgerald's goal was assisted by Connor Brown and Chris Roll.
  • The Cardinals would regain the lead at 5:31 in the first on a Terence Durkin '16 goal which he defected off a Robbie Harbison '18 shot. Freshman Mike Yablong also got an assist on the play.
  • Amherst again came back to tie the game at 12:39 in the second. Fitzgerald was able to net his second goal of the game. His goal was assisted by Roll and Will Vosejpka.
  • With 1:46 remaining in the game, Taenaka was able to score the game winning goal off passes by Espinoza and Alex Carlacci '16. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • This was the Cardinals first win over Amherst since Nov. 22, 2008 when Wesleyan edged out Amherst 1-0 at Spurrier-Snyder Arena.

  •  The Cardinals are right back at it tomorrow as they take on Hamilton at 3 p.m.
  •  Amherst will play at Trinity tomorrow at 4 p.m.
