The Lead: The Wesleyan University men's soccer team's 2016 season came to an end Tuesday as the Cardinals hosted Connecticut College on Jackson Field, and fell short, 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wesleyan controlled the tempo for much of the first half and outshot the Camels, 7-4, but were unable to capitalize on the few scoring opportunities it had.
- The second half was a different story early on as Conn. College came out strong after the break.
- In the 56th minute of action, Ousmane Dieng found Chris Lockwood for the game-winner as Lockwood sent the ball past Wesleyan goalkeeper Jack Katkavich '17.
- The Cardinals had a few chances late in the half to even the game but came away scoreless.
- With just over 13 minutes remaining in regulation, Charlie Gruner '17 sent one from deep that hit the crossbar.
- Roughly five minutes later, Adam Cowie-Haskell '18 had back-to-back headers inside the box that went just above the crossbar, narrowly missing the open space in goal.
- The Camels' defense held strong, however, and denied Wesleyan's late attemp in the final minute to hang on for the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Despite the loss, Wesleyan outshot Conn. College, 14-11. However, they only placed three shots on goal.
- The Cardinals also held a 6-1 lead in corner kicks.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Following Wesleyan's heartbreaking double-overtime loss against Amherst on Saturday, the Cardinals' hopes of a NESCAC Tournament appearance ended. Today's game marked the final contest of the 2016 campaign for Wesleyan.
- This is the first time since the inception of the NESCAC Tournament, back in 2000, that Wesleyan has not qualified for the postseason.
- Cowie-Haskell concludes the season with eight goals – three game-winners – and 19 points, which currently rank third in the conference in both categories.
- With the win, Conn. College moves into a tie for fourth-place in the NESCAC standings with Hamilton, however, the Continentals defeated the Camels earlier in the season to own the tiebreaker.
