Cardinals Fall Short Against WPI, 54-49

THE BASICS:

The Lead: The Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell short in a difficult non-conference road game against WPI Saturday afternoon in the WPI Holiday Tournament Championship game, 54-49.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The first quarter went back and forth as it featured three ties and two lead changes.
  • Trailing 8-4, the Cardinals went on a 5-0 run capped off by a three-pointer from Maeve Vitale '18 at the 2:38 mark to take their first lead of the game, 9-8.
  • However, WPI responded with five unanswered to close out the first.
  • The second quarter was a similar story with both teams exchanging baskets.
  • Down by six, 15-9, Wesleyan went on an 11-5 run to even the score at 20-20 following a lay-up by Heidi Scarth '20 with 5:57 to play in the half.
  • The second quarter featured three ties and five lead changes, as the Cardinals outscored the Engineers 22-17 to take a 31-30 halftime lead.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • At the 7:14 mark of the third, Sarah Rogers hit a jumper to put WPI back on top, 34-33, as WPI would lead the rest of the quarter.
  • Vitale got Wesleyan within one, 38-37 with 1:26 on the clock, but neither team would score down the stretch.
  • The Cardinals came out hot to start the fourth and opened with a 7-2 run as a pair of free throws from Tara Berger '19 with 7:37 remaining gave Wesleyan a 44-40 lead.
  • WPI retaliated, however, and scored 11 unanswered points as a three from Stasha Greenalch gave the home team a 51-44 lead, and the Engineers never looked back.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Olivia Gorman '19 scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed four rebounds, while Vitale joined her in double-figures with 13 points and seven boards. Berger pulled in a game-high nine rebounds and Chynna Bailey '19 added seven and a game-high three assists.
  • The Engineers were led by Ama Biney and Greenalch with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Biney also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out a team-high two assists.
  • Wesleyan led the rebounding battle, 45-39, but WPI capitalized on the Cardinals' mistakes with 23 points off turnovers.
