Eight Cardinals Register a Point, but Men's Ice Hockey Lose 5-3 at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine - Jordan Jancze '18 registered two assists as the Wesleyan University men's ice hockey team took a 2-1 lead against Colby College in the second period, but the Cardinals would eventually fall 5-3 to the Mules on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals would have eight different players register a point in the defeat.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams played a scoreless first period with Wesleyan holding an 11-9 advantage in shots. 
  • The Cardinals opened up a 2-1 lead on the Mules in the second period with goals from Mike Yablong '19 and James Kline '17.
  • The Mules went 2-5 on the power play while Wesleyan was 0-2.
  • Wesleyan outshot Colby 34-28.
  • Jancze registered two assists for the Cardinals, who had eight different players register a point in the game. 
  • Cam MacDonald had a hat trick for Colby.
  • Cardinals net minder Dawson Sprigings '17 made 23 saves on the day while Colby goaltender Emerson Verrier made 31. 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Wesleyan got on the board first as Yablong scored his second goal in as many days at the 5:51 mark of the second period. His goal was assisted by Jancze and Cole Morissette '17.
  • Colby was able to answer at 11:49 as MacDonald scored his first goal of the game, as he got one past Sprigings off of passes from EJ Rauseo and Geoff Sullivan.
  • The Cardinals would regain the lead as Kline netted his team leading 12th goal of the year with the extra attacker on a delayed penalty call. Jancze got his second assist of the game of the goal. Theo Tydingco '18 was also given an assist on the goal, which was scored at 16:37 in the second period.
  • Once again the Mules answered, this time on the power play as Michael Rudolf scored his fourth goal of the year at 19:23 in the second. Jack Burton and Nick O'Connor assisted on the goal.
  • Colby would take a 3-2 lead on MacDonald's second goal of the game, which was assisted by Rauseo and Devin Albert. MacDonald was able to tip the puck past Sprigings just 1:01 into the third period.
  • Colby would bring their lead to two goals at 4-2 when Burton took passes from Mario Benicky and Colin Reilly and rifled a shot past Sprigings with 6:45 gone by in the third.
  • The Cardinals would answer the Mules goal with one of their own at 13:54 as Vincent Lima '19 got passes from Andy Espinoza '19 and Eric Casey '16 and shot one over the glove of Verrier. That brought the Colby lead to one.
  • Colby would extend their lead back to two goals as Macdonald completed his hat trick with a power play goal at 17:24. Rauseo and Geoff Sullivan got their 11th and 13th assists on the year on the goal. 
  • The Mules would hold the Cardinals and go onto win 5-3. 

UP NEXT

  • The Cardinals will travel to Hartford, Conn. to take on in-state rival Trinity on Friday, Feb. 19. Face-off is slated for 7 p.m.
  • Colby will travel to New London on Friday, Feb. 19 to face Connecticut College. The puck will drop at 7 p.m.
