HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior captain Jay Matthews scored twice as the Wesleyan University men's hockey team took on No. 8 Trinity College on Friday night at Williams Rink at the Koeppel Community Sports Center. The Cardinals put on an offensive push late in the game, pulling their goaltender for over four minutes late in the third period as they were down three goals, but they would fall to the Bantams 5-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams combined for a four goal first period.
- Jay Matthews scored two goals for the Cardinals.
- The two teams were just about even in shots and face offs, with Wesleyan holding a one shot advantage at 38-37, and Trinity winning one more face-off at 38-37.
- Wesleyan pulled goaltender Dawson Sprigings '16 numerous times in the final period, accounting for for over four minutes of extra attacker time in the third period for the Cardinals.
- Trinity went 2-4 on the power play while the Cardinals went 1-4.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Bantams got on the board first as Ethan Holdaway took a Brandon Cole pass and put it by Cardinals goaltender Daniel Weiss at 8:35 in the first period.
- Trinity would get another goal on the power play at 9:28 as Anthony Sabitsky got one by Weiss. His goal was assisted by Sean Orlando and Nathaniel Heilbron.
- TheJay Matthewsot on the board with a goal by senior captain Jay Matthews. Matthews took passes from Vincent Lima '19 and James Kline '17 and got the puck past Bantams net minder Heilbron at 11:18. The goal was Matthews' seventh on the year.
- Trinity would pull back ahead by two as Orlando took a pass from Ryan Cole and got it past Weiss with nine seconds remaining in the first period. The Bantams would enter the second leading 3-1.
- In the second period, the Cardinals brought the lead back to one, as senior captain Eric Casey got his first goal on the year on the power play at 15:55. The defenseman's goal was assisted by Luke Babcock '19.
- Going into the third period with Trinity up one, 3-2, the Bantams would increase the lead as Connor Hegarty put one past Sprigings at 5:55. His goal was assisted by Michael O'Brien and Orlando.
- Trinity increased their lead to two goals with a power play goal at 8:21. Cole, taking a Griffyn Martin pass was able to sneak one past Spirgings, to bring the Bantams lead to 5-3.
- Down 5-3, the Cardinals pulled Sprigings with over four minutes left in hopes of chipping away at the Trinity lead, and they were able to do so as Matthews, off a face-off win, was able to net his second goal of the night at 16:09 to bring Wesleyan to within two goals. His goal was assisted by Jordan Jancze '18.
- The Cardinals would continue to pressure Heilbron and the Trinity defense with an extra attacker, but Trinity was able to escape with the 5-3 victory.

- The two teams are right back at it tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. as they complete their home-and-home series. The Cardinals will celebrate their six seniors prior to the game.
