Cardinals Fall to Middlebury 4-2

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Wesleyan University women's hockey team fell to Middlebury College, who are unbeaten in NESCAC play, as the Panthers collected a 4-2 victory over the Cardinals on Friday in Kenyon Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jessica Young registered four points, scoring twice and gathering two assists for Middlebury.
  • After going down 1-0, the Panthers scored 3 unanswered goals.
  • Cardinals netminder Laura Corcoran '16 made 29 saves.
  • Wesleyan was able to convert on their power play, scoring while on the man-advantage to cut the Middlebury lead to 3-2.
  • The Panthers outshot the Cardinals 33-14.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wesleyan opened the scoring 6:55 into the game, when Madzie Carroll '17 wristed the puck on goal from the left point, before Cici Frattasio '18 cut through the slot and tipped the puck in for her third goal of the season.
  • Middlebury nearly tied the game just over a minute later when Jenna Marotta fired a shot from the right circle that hit the cross bar.
  • The Panthers tied the game at the 14:37 mark of the period on a play that started along their own blue line. Grace Jennings swiped the puck away from a Wesleyan player and Young collected it in the neutral zone and raced up the left side. She cut through the circle as her shot eluded Cardinal goalie Laura Corcoran to tie knot the game at 1-1.
  • The Panthers took a 2-1 at the 9:30 mark, when Winslow slid a pass behind Corcoran to the left post where Shauna Hickman swept the puck in.
  • In the third period, Winslow gave the hosts a two-goal cushion at the 11:15 mark. She took a pass drop pass from Young behind the Cardinal net, stepped out front, and snapped a shot in for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
  • Wesleyan closed the difference back to a goal, scoring while on the power play. Jenny Robinson '16 pounced on a loose puck on a scramble in front of the Panther net, making it a 3-2 game.
  • Young capped off her big night with an insurance goal into an empty net with 35 seconds remaining.
