Sylla Scores Two Late Goals to Help Lead Wesleyan Past UMass-Boston in its 2016 Season Opener, 3-1

The Lead: After falling behind 1-0, the Wesleyan University women's soccer team scored three unanswered goals to win in its 2016 season opener against UMass-Boston. The Cardinals, who controlled the tempo throughout, have now won back-to-back season openers against the Beacons. Sarah Sylla '17 scored the game-winning goal for Wesleyan, and tacked on an insurance tally late to seal the victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • UMass Boston got on the board first with a goal at 19:32, as Gigi Braga took the pass from Carly Robinson and snuck it past Wesleyan keeper, Claire Coyle '20.
  • Sophomore Olivia Gorman tied the game up at one at the 35:47 mark as she took a pass from Chrissy Gonzalez-Gandolfi '17 and sent it past Alyssa Fugiel.
  • In the second half, Sylla gave Wesleyan the lead when Katie Frizzell '20 connected with the senior forward in the 83rd minute for the eventual game-winner.
  • Just under three minutes later, at 86:05, Sylla notched her second goal of the game to seal the win for the Cardinals. She received a Mo Nelson '19 pass and sent it to the back of the net as Wesleyan pulled away to claim its 2016 season and home opener.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Wesleyan controlled the majority of the game, outshooting the visitors by a 40-4 margin. Seventeen of the Cardinals shots were on goal, while UMass-Boston placed three on net. 
  • Fugiel made 14 saves for the visitors while Coyle made two for the Cardinals in her first collegiate game.

HEAD COACH EVA MEREDITH:

  • "I think as the game went on, coming back from a goal down shows some resilience and I think we came to life more and more," said Meredith. "At the end of the day I am happy with the result."

UP NEXT:

  • Wesleyan will return to the field on Saturday, September 10 and will head to Mount Holyoke to take on the Lyons at 12 p.m.
  • The Beacons will return to the field on Saturday as well, and will face Brandeis University at 1 p.m.
