Mullen Wins 400th as Cardinals Rally to Defeat Bates, 62-58

THE BASICS:

The Lead: The Wesleyan University women's basketball team rallied from a double-digit first half deficit to defeat Bates College Saturday afternoon at home, 62-58. The win marked the 400th of Head Coach Kate Mullen's coaching career.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Bobcats came out hot to start the game and a 7-0 run, capped off by a free throw from Carly Christofi, gave the visitor's a 16-5 lead with 4:31 to play in the first.
  • However, Wesleyan responded with a run of its own and outscored Bates 11-3 down the stretch as they trailed 19-16 entering the second quarter.
  • Both teams struggled to score in the second and a lay-up by Nina Davenport ended a scoreless drought that went 3:26 of the opening minutes.
  • A three-pointer from Lyse Henshaw at the 4:59 mark gave Bates a 25-18 lead, but Wesleyan cut it to one minutes later on a lay-up from Maddie Bledsoe '18.
  • The Bobcats responded with a lay-up from Melanie Binkhorst, but Tara Berger '19 put back a lay-up before the buzzer sounded as Bates held a 28-27 lead at halftime. 

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

 

  • The Bobcats scored seven unanswered early on in the third quarter to pull ahead by eight, however, Wesleyan went on an 11-0 run and held Bates scoreless for the final 5:40 of the quarter.
  • At the 1:32 mark of the third, a lay-up by Chynna Bailey '19 gave the Cardinals their first lead since the opening basket of the game. Wesleyan led 40-37 entering the fourth, and a three-pointer by Ava Tompkins '20 just nine seconds in, extended the run to 14 consecutive points.
  • Heidi Scarth '20 scored six straight for the Cardinals in the closing minutes as a lay-up at the 3:21 mark put the home team ahead, 56-46.
  • The Bobcats didn't back down easily and went on a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to three with 1:05, however, it proved to be the closest the visitor's would get the rest of the way as Kadijah Mathews '18 sealed the victory at the line.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Scarth had a career day for the Cardinals as she scored a team-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, the most points of her collegiate career thus far. She also grabbed six rebounds, while Maeve Vitale '18 pulled in a game-high nine and added eight points.
  • Bates was led by Nina Davenport, who scored a game-high 23 points, and Bernadette Connors who added 14. Allie Coppola led the team on the glass with nine boards.
  • Wesleyan held a 44-39 edge in rebounding and forced 19 turnovers. The Cardinals also held a commanding 38-18 advantage in the paint, while their bench outscored the Bobcats bench, 40-6.

UP NEXT:

  • Wesleyan returns to the court Wednesday, Jan. 25 and will host non-conference opponent Fisher at 7 p.m.
  • The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Jan. 28 and will play at No. 1 Tufts. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
