MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Sophomore goalkeeper Delaney Wood made nine saves on 12 shot attempts, but the Wesleyan University field hockey team lost to the 2016 national runner-up and sixth-ranked Tufts University Tuesday night, 3-1.
The Cardinals are now 2-5 overall this season and 0-3 in the NESCAC. With the win, the Jumbos improve to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Tufts controlled the tempo for the majority of the game.
- After more than 16 minutes of scoreless action, the Jumbos got on the board when Marguerite Salamone found Brigid Gliwa off a penalty corner, and Gliwa lifted the ball over Wood's outstretched arms for the score.
- It proved to be the lone goal of the half, as Tufts took a 1-0 lead into the break.
- At the 56:36 mark, the visitor's added their second goal of the day when Mary Kate Patton connected with Mary Travers for the game-winner.
- Just over five minutes later, Tufts essentially put the game out of reach as Beth Krikorian found the back of the net off an assist from Hanaa Malik.
- Wesleyan cut the deficit to two at the 66:27 mark when Tierney Behles '18 scored her first goal of the season as she snuck one into the bottom left corner of the next through a crowded defense, but the margin was too difficult to overcome. Eric Horowitz '20 assisted on the play.
UP NEXT:
- The Cardinals return to action Saturday, Sept. 30 with another matchup against a nationally-ranked top-10 team, as they head to No. 9 Hamilton. The game is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
