WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Wesleyan women's soccer team was edged 2-1 on Saturday during a rainy contest at Williams (10-0-2, 6-0-1). Despite the loss, the Cardinals (6-3-2, 3-2-2) are one of just four teams who have scored on the defending National Champion Ephs this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Williams looked to get on the board quickly, taking back-to-back shots during the third minute. At the 3:14 mark Cardinal goalkeeper Sarah Hammond denied a shot by Sarah Scire, before Aspen Pierson's header shot sailed just high four seconds later.
- Wesleyan grabbed the early lead, scoring 9:25 into the contest after Liz Young barreled down the field on a breakaway. Young went one-on-one with Williams' goalie Olivia Barnhill, before finding the bottom left of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
- The Ephs found the equalizer at the 42:38 mark after Sydney Jones' initial shot was denied by a diving-Hammond. The ball slipped back into traffic, as Jones one-timed it to Rain Condie who found the back of the goal, making it 1-1 heading into the intermission.
- Williams took advantage of a loose ball in the box at the 48:13 mark, as Georgia Lord chipped the ball through traffic and just over the head of Hammond, making it 2-1.
- The Cardinals looked to knot the game at the 71:17 mark after a cornerkick by Katie Stewart Frizzell, but Melissa Wilhelm's shot was blocked by a Williams' defender and the Ephs were able to hang on for the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Hammond made seven saves in net for the Cardinals, while Barnhill was forced to make just one stop in goal for the Ephs.
UP NEXT:
- The Cardinals have a quick turnaround, traveling to No. 5 Middlebury tomorrow for a noon start.
