Field Hockey Drops 2-1 Road Contest at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Wesleyan field hockey team (3-7, 0-6) was edged 2-1 by Colby (6-4, 2-4), as the Mules scored in the final-minute of play and were able to hang on for the win. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wesleyan opened the scoring at the 11:28 mark when Nikki Gerjarusak found the back of the cage, making it 1-0.
  • The first half saw much back and forth action, with both teams taking five shots apiece.
  • Out of the intermission, Colby wasted little time finding the equalizer, scoring just 4:12 into the stanza. Georgia Cassidy stopped an insert from Delaney Keithley before rocketing a shot past Cardinal goalkeeper Delaney Wood.
  • Wesleyan looked to extend its lead at the 60:14 mark when Olivia Bagelieri stopped an insert by Rachel Pomerantz, but her hard shot was thwarted by Mule's goalkeeper Riley Whitmyer.
  • With time winding down, Colby's Eliza Mell found the back of the cage on a dish from Cassidy with just 40 seconds remaining.
  • The Cardinals had a last attempt to knot the game and send it into overtime, but Baglieri's shot as time expired was denied, as the Mules held on for the win.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Wood made five saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Whitmyer had seven stops for the Mules.

UP NEXT:

  • The Cardinals will travel to Wheaton on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. contest, before playing back-to-back NESCAC games on the road next weekend.
