BOSTON, Mass. – The Wesleyan women's hockey team (2-1-0) fell to Manhattanville College 2-1 in the Codfish Bowl Championship game hosted by UMass-Boston on Sunday. The Cardinals advanced to the title game after defeating the hosts 2-1, while the Spartans' (5-0-1) shutout Bowdoin 4-0 to move on to Sunday's championship. In the consolation contest, UMass-Boston triumphed 2-0 over Bowdoin.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Despite a commanding 19-3 shots advantage by Manhattanville in the first period, the Spartans were unable to capitalize on any opportunities, as Wesleyan's goaltender Allegra Grant denied all 19.
- Play evened out in the second frame, as the Cardinals came out of the break strong. Wesleyan opened the scoring at the 12:23 mark after Ally Damren sent a pass into the slot from the left faceoff circle. Sydnee Goyer one-timed the cross to put the Cardinals up 1-0 with her second goal of the season.
- Manhattanville found the equalizer 3:39 into the third period when Amanda Sabia found the back of the net, making it 1-1.
- The Cardinals had a chance to take the lead at the 12:12 mark on a power-play opportunity, but Sarah Goss' shot was denied, keeping the contest deadlocked.
- The Spartan's Tianna Lopes netted the game-winner just 18 seconds later, when the teams skated four-on-four, to make it 2-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Grant was a powerhouse in goal for Wesleyan, making 35 stops during the contest, while Rose Pijaca had 18 saves to pick up the win in net for Manhattanville.
UP NEXT:
- The Cardinals will begin NESCAC play next weekend when they travel to Williams. Saturday's game will begin at 7:00 p.m., while Sunday's contest will start at 3:00 p.m.
