Women's Ice Hockey Strikes Late but Falls, 3-1, to Trinity on Saturday Afternoon

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior captain Kelcie Finn record a pair of goals for the Trinity College women's ice hockey team during a 3-1 triumph over Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at the Spurrier-Snyder Rink in Middletown, Conn.

The Cardinals held their annual Senior Day activities prior to the game, honoring their three-player senior class in captain Alex Horton, assistant captain Maddie Nash and forward Cici Frattasio for their dedication over the last four years to the program.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • All four goals in the contest were power-play tallies, and Finn opened the scoring during a 5-on-4 situation at the 17:44 mark of the first for the Bantams (7-14-1, 3-10-1 NESCAC), as she redirected a shot from the right point by sophomore defensewoman Alex Sinson.
  • Trinity earned one minute, 13 seconds of 5-on-3 play at the 2:58 mark of the second, and 25 seconds later, freshman defensewoman Julia Lee fired a shot from below the right circle into the back of the net, immediately following a scrum in the crease.
  • Fast forward another 25 seconds to the 3:48 mark of the period, and Finn gave Trinity a 3-0 lead on her team-leading 10th goal of the year. Sophomore defensewoman Taylor Roy passed the puck to senior defensewoman Hannah Oganeku at the left point. Oganeku ripped a drive toward net, and Finn redirected the attempt in the left circle, allowing the puck to navigate its way pass the goal line.
  • At the 16:19 mark of the third period, the Cardinals (5-13-4, 1-9-4 NESCAC) were awarded one minute, 32 seconds of 5-on-3 action. At the 16:34 mark, junior defensewoman Jackie Kilar sent a shot on net, and Frattasio corralled the loose puck and sent it into the back of the net from the edge of the crease, trimming the visitors' lead to 3-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Trinity outshot Wesleyan, 33-25, including maintaining a 16-7 edge in the second frame. The Cardinals held a 7-4 lead in shots on goal during the final 20 minutes.
  • Sophomore goalie Allegra Grant (2-10-4) made a game-high 30 stops for the hosts, while Bantams senior goalie Sydney Belinskas (5-9-1) denied 24-of-25 shots.
  • The Bantams were efficient on the advantage, going 3-for-6, and the hosts cashed in on 1-of-5 power plays. During the course of the game, the two teams combined for 11 minor penalties.
  • Each team went 30-for-60 in the faceoff circle, as freshman forward Sydnee Goyer and sophomore forward Alexis Banquer went 8-of-11 and 6-of-11, respectively. Freshman forward Karinna Cave-Hawkins led the way for Trinity, winning 10-of-14 draws.

  • The Cardinals will compete against Little Three-foe Amherst on Friday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m., as the squad will host its "Pink in the Rink" game at the Spurrier-Snyder Rink in Middletown, Conn.
