AMHERST, Mass. - The Wesleyan men's hockey team (11-4-2, 9-0-2) recorded its sixth shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory at Little Three rival Amherst (8-6-2, 5-4-2) on Friday evening. This was the first win for either team since December 2, 2016, as the teams have tied each other in the last four meetings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Mammoths had a great chance to open the scoring at the 5:24 mark, but Pieter von Steinberg's writer from the high slot was denied by a glove save from Wesleyan's goaltender Tim Sestak.
- The Cardinals scored the lone goal of the game with 16:31 expired in the first during a power play. Walker Harris one-timed a pass from Chad Malinowski inside the near post for his team-leading 11th tally of the season.
- Wesleyan looked to extend its lead at the 3:39 mark of the second, but Harris' shot from the doorstep was denied by Amherst netminder Michael Cullen.
- The third period saw much back and forth action, with neither team able to capitalize, as the Cardinals hung on for the 1-0 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sestak recorded an impressive 47 saves to pick up his sixth shutout of the season.
- Cullen suffered the loss in net for Amherst, making 23 stops.
