MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan University women's basketball team cruised to a commanding 72-46 non-conference win on Tuesday night over the University of Maine Fort Kent in Silloway Gymnasium.
Marina Petruzzi scored a team-high 14 points as the Cardinals improved to 7-5 overall. The Bengals were led by Trinity Washington's 15 points as they fell to 12-3 on the year.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:
- Wesleyan came out hot to start the game and scored six-straight points, all on fast-break layups.
- After a visitor's timeout, Maine Fort Kent answered with four unanswered to cut the deficit to two, but the Cardinals scored 10 of the next 12 as a 3-pointer by Petruzzi gave Wesleyan a 16-6 lead at the 3:43 mark.
- The Bengals, however, closed out the first quarter on an 8-0 run to get within two.
- The second quarter was a different story as the Cardinals outscored Maine Fort Kent, 19-5.
- At the 5:15 mark, a 3-pointer by Emma Roush gave Wesleyan a double-digit advantage as it went ahead, 28-16.
- The Cardinals continued to increase their lead down the stretch and at the 1:19 mark, Olivia Gorman hit one from behind-the-arc to give the home team a 35-19 halftime advantage.
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS:
- It was much of the same in the third quarter as Wesleyan extended its lead throughout.
- With 2:52 remaining, a lay-up by Katy O'Connor gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the game to that point as they held a 50-23 advantage.
- After a 21-8 third quarter, Wesleyan led 56-27 heading into the fourth.
- The Bengals outscored the Cardinals in the final 10 minutes, 19-16, but the lead was never in doubt as Wesleyan cruised to the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Petruzzi dropped 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. She was joined in double-figures by Gorman who dropped 13 points, hitting 3-of-6 from downtown. On the glass, O'Connor and Tara Berger led Wesleyan with 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively, and Maddie Clark dished out a team-high five assists.
- Ivette Trujillo added 10 points for the Bengals, while Tajaheray McMahan scored nine, pulled in a team-high seven rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists.

- Wesleyan returns to conference play on Friday, Jan. 11 and will play at Hamilton. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
