CLINTON, N.Y. – The Wesleyan field hockey team (5-8, 1-7) scored twice in the second half, but it was not enough, as Hamilton (5-7, 3-6) hung on for the 3-2 victory. Today marked the ninth meeting all-time between the two teams, as the Continentals now hold a 5-4 edge in the series.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Hamilton got on the board at the 7:20 mark after a penalty corner by Cat Donohue. Michaela Guittari stopped the insert and rifled a hard shot on goal that Wesleyan goaltender Delaney Wood got a piece of the ball, but it just sneaked inside the left post for the 1-0 lead.
- The Continentals had a good chance to double the lead with 13:46 expired after a penalty corner. Giuttari sent a pass to Sarah Pierpont on the post, but Pierpont's tip-in attempt went just wide.
- Hamilton extended its advantage to 2-0 at the 21:37 mark when Maddie Beitler redirected a shot by Giuttari.
- Wesleyan answered just 19 seconds later when Nikki Gerjarusak dribbled past three Continental defenders on the right side, before tucking the ball inside the left post to make it 2-1.
- The Continentals responded with 24:25 expired when Donohue one-timed an insert by Pierpont into the bottom left for the 3-1 advantage.
- The Cardinals cut the deficit to one (3-2) at the 32:06 mark. Grace Kohn sent a centering pass to Diana Schwarz, before Schwarz worked around a Hamilton defender, before finding the bottom left corner.
- Wesleyan had a handful of chances for the equalizer, but a strong Continental defense denied all chances as Hamilton hung on for the 3-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wood made six saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Maggie Reville stopped nine shots to earn the win.
- The Continentals held a slight edge in shots (20-16), while each team took 14 penalty corners.
