Strong Start Lifts Cardinals Past Rams 3-1

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan women's hockey team (3-2-0) scored three times in the opening frame, lifting the Cardinals past Suffolk 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, Wesleyan extends its win streak to three, including a two-game sweep over the Rams (2-7-2).

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Cardinals wasted little time getting on the board, scoring three times in the opening frame. The first tally came with 7:24 expired after Maggie Curran stole the puck in transition. Curran sent a pass to Sophia Marra at the top of the left faceoff circle, before Marra found the back of the goal for her third tally in as many games.
  • Wesleyan extended the advantage just 1:29 later. Allie Damren's initial shot was denied by Suffolk goaltender Julia McLellan, but Audrey McMahon was there to one-time the rebound for the 2-0 lead.
  • The Cardinals made it a 3-0 game with 13:34 expired when Curran rifled a shot from just inside the blue line.
  • The Rams looked to cut the deficit at the 17:39 mark, but Jesse Kennedy's bid from the doorstep was thwarted by Wesleyan netminder Allegra Grant.
  • Out of the break, Suffolk had a great opportunity to get on the board, but Grace Scholz's shot as the Suffolk power play expired was denied with a glove save from Grant.
  • The Rams continued to pressure in the offensive zone, taking a flurry of shots during the 16th minute. An initial shot by Madison Duff sent Grant sprawling, but she was able to use her leg pads to deny back-to-back chances after that.
  • Suffolk cut the deficit to 3-1 with 3:48 expired in the final frame. Meagan MacNeil's initial shot was denied, but Jesse Kennedy was on the right pipe to tip in the rebound and rob Grant of the shutout.
  • The Rams pulled their goalie with 1:30 remaining in hopes of knotting the game, but all five shots taken in the final minute were denied by Grant to hang on for the two-goal victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Grant earned the win in goal for Wesleyan, making 30 saves.
  • McLellan suffered the loss between the pipes for Suffolk, stopping 26 shots over 58:30.
