Wesleyan Drops Home Game to Saint Anselm

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan women's hockey team (3-3) dropped a non-conference bout 5-2 to Saint Anselm on Friday evening. The loss snapped the Cardinals three-game win streak, while the Hawks (10-3) tallied their seventh-straight victory.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Saint Anselm got on the board quickly when Kelly Golini scored bar down at the 3:56 mark.
  • The Cardinals had a great chance to tally the equalizer when they skated five-on-three for just shy of two minutes beginning at the 16:30 mark, but a strong Hawks defense denied all of Wesleyan's chances. The best opportunity during the stretch came at the 18:15 mark when Alicia Nickolenko wrapped around the goal and attempted to sneak the puck inside the right pipe, but goaltender Caroline Kukas thwarted the chance.
  • Wesleyan looked to knot the game with 1:57 expired in the second frame when Brooke Keough sent a pass from the right faceoff circle into the slot, but Sophia Marra's one-time bid was denied.
  • The Hawks extended the lead at the 8:37 mark when Amanda Nylander scored on a power play to make it 2-0.
  • Saint Anselm increased its advantage to 3-0 with 17:54 expired. Mary Lambert battled a Wesleyan defender, before her shot sent Cardinal netminder sprawling, but Jayden Young was there to one time the rebound for the shorthanded tally.
  • Wesleyan responded just 38 seconds later, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Allie Damren sent a pass from behind the net to Audrey McMahon on the right post, before McMahon scored her team-leading sixth of the season glove-side.
  • Out of the intermission, Saint Anselm's Katy Meehan one-timed a shot from the doorstep, making it 4-1 during a power play with 7:55 expired in the final frame.
  • The Hawks made it 5-1 at the 16:32 mark when Golini lifted the puck over Grant's shoulder glove-side for her second tally of the game.
  • Wesleyan responded with two minutes remaining when Bridget Cornell fired a shot from just inside the blue line, tucking the puck inside the left pipe to make it 5-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Grant made 24 saves in goal for Wesleyan, eclipsing the 2,000th career-save mark (2,020).
  • Kukas stopped 23 shots to earn the win for Saint Anselm.
