Women's Basketball Clinches NESCAC Tournament Berth, Defeats Colby 78-59

WATERVILLE, Maine – Olivia Gorman scored a game-high 23 points and Tara Berger recorded a double-double with 21 and 15 rebounds to help lead the Wesleyan University women's basketball team to a 78-59 win over Colby College Friday night. With the win, the Cardinals secured a spot in the NESCAC Tournament. They are now 14-9 overall and 4-5 in league play. Colby drops to 10-13 and 2-7 in the league.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Cardinals came out strong to start the game as a layup by Gorman at the 5:34 mark capped off an 11-0 run as they led by seven.
  • Wesleyan increased the lead to nine, 20-11, following another basket by Gorman with 2:19 on the clock, but the Mules closed out the first on an 8-0 run.
  • The Cardinals led by as much as six on three occasions in the second quarter.
  • Colby cut the deficit to one at the 1:30 mark, but Wesleyan scored five unanswered to lead 38-32 at the break.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The visitors continued to increase their lead in the third and with 6:29 on the clock, Gorman hit one from downtown to put the Cardinals ahead by 12.
  • The lead extended to 18 at the 1:09 mark following a basket from Berger. A 3-pointer by Keagan Dunbar seconds later made it a 62-47 Wesleyan lead entering the fourth.
  • The Cardinals' lead was never in jeopardy as they outscored the Mules 16-12 in the final 10 minutes en route to the commanding win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Gorman finished with 23 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. In addition to her 21 points and 15 boards, Berger also blocked three shots. Marina Petruzzi dropped 12 points off the bench and Chynna Bailey scored seven, grabbed six rebounds, dished out a game-high five assists, and recorded two steals.
  • Jackie Albanese led Colby with 16 points in just 18 minutes. She was joined in double-figures by Dunbar (14) and Ainsley Burns (12). Dunbar and Katie McCrum led the team with five rebounds each and two assists apiece.
  • The Cardinals dominated the glass with a 52-34 rebounding advantage.

UP NEXT:

  • Wesleyan is back in action tomorrow and will play at No. 1 Bowdoin in its regular-season finale. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
