No. 11 Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Kean, 18-7

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Abby Manning scored five goals on Saturday afternoon to help guide the 11th-ranked Wesleyan women's lacrosse team to a commanding 18-7 non-conference win over Kean University.

Caitlin Wood and Johanna Copeland scored three goals each, while Sydney Prokupek added two and one assist as the Cardinals improved to 6-1 overall. The Cougars were led by Katie Pileggi and Amanda Ehrhart with two goals each as they dropped to 1-6.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Wesleyan came out hot to start the game and jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with 24:33 on the clock.
  • Wood rifled in a free position shot for the Cardinals' second goal of the game and shortly after snuck one into the left side.
  • Prokupek put Wesleyan up 5-0 on a free position shot. As the defense swarmed her, she extended the stick over the goalie's head, placing her shot in the top right corner.
  • Kean got on the board 30 seconds later as Meghan Tillger dished it off to Pileggi who ran straight towards the goal undefended.
  • The Cardinals answered shortly after as Manning dodged defenders and scored in the right side of the net to give the home team a 6-1 advantage with 23:22 to play in the half.
  • After a goal by Pileggi, Wesleyan responded with a 3-0 run to go ahead 9-2 at the 14:49 mark.
  • The Cougars got within six with 13:21 on the clock before a 2-0 stretch by the Cardinals.
  • With 2:26 left in the first, Dana Meehan took advantage of a player-up opportunity for the final score of the half as Wesleyan led 11-4.
  • The Cardinals continued to extend their lead in the second half. After a goal by Danni LeSaint just 1:46 into the half, Wesleyan responded with a 5-0 run to go ahead 16-5 with 21:11 to play, essentially putting the game out of reach.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • In addition to Copeland, Manning, and Wood, Julia Gretsky totaled four points with one goal and three assists, and Abigail Horst, Emi Ogden-Fung, Izzy Powell and Rylee White all tallied a score. Prokupek and Caroline Sgaglione each had three draw controls, while Sgaglione led the Wesleyan defense with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. 
  • LeSaint, Meehan and Taylor Nyberg each scored a goal for Kean. Emily Bretschneider led the defense with two caused turnovers and LeSaint led all players with six draw controls. 

UP NEXT:

  • Wesleyan is back in action on Wednesday, March 27 and will play at Stevens. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
