Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 12 Women's Lacrosse Defeats No. 11 Colby Decisively, 16-6

WATERVILLE, Maine. – Abby Manning and Abigail Horst recorded four goals each to help 12th-ranked Wesleyan women's lacrosse open up a 7-0 lead on the way to a 16-6 win against 11th-ranked Colby College in NESCAC action Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.

The Cardinals move to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the league, while the Mules drop to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Cardinals came out flying, as Wesleyan got an unassisted goal from Horst and a free-position score from Manning in the first two minutes of the game. 
  • While the Cardinals continued to score, Wesleyan's defense did not allow a goal for more than 17 minutes. After Colby cut the margin to 7-1, Wesleyan scored three straight goals for a 10-1 lead.
  • The Mules scored the last goal of the first half and the first goal of the second half to cut the deficit to 10-3. Wesleyan, though, scored four of the next five goals to pull away.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Wesleyan had an 18-6 advantage in draw controls and had three players with at least four. Manning and Caroline Sgaglione both had six draws and Horst finished with four.
  • Horst had three of her four goals in the opening half to spark the Cardinals to a 10-2 lead at halftime. Manning, who also had an assist, had two goals in each half. 
  • Caitlin Wood finished with two goals and one assist for the Cardinals. Johanna Copeland also had two goals and Sydney Prokupek added two assists. Rylee White, Izzy Powell, Allie Damren, and Emi Ogden-Fung had a goal each.
  • Banks Dotson, Robyn Pirie, Gwen Geisler, Bridget Horwood, Emma Banks, and Grace Crowell had goals for Colby. 
  • Wesleyan goaltender Allegra Grant stopped nine shots, caused a turnover, and had two ground balls. Breanna Cavanaugh finished with two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Sgaglione also had a caused turnover and three ground balls.
  • Colby goaltenders Izzy Scribano and Emily Podgorni combined for seven saves. Sarah Stark and Kelsey Otley both had two caused turnovers and one ground ball. 

UP NEXT:

  • Wesleyan is back in action on Wednesday, April 3 for a Little Three showdown against No. 13 Amherst at home. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
