HARTFORD, Conn. – The Wesleyan softball team (12-18) split a doubleheader at Trinity on Tuesday. The Cardinals eased to an 11-6 victory in game one, but fell short 6-4 as the Bantams (14-12) mounted a comeback in the second game.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:
- Wesleyan wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, recorded a run in the top of the first. Danielle Rinaldi singled up the middle and advanced to third on a single by Sophia Sciarappa, before later touching home on a wild pitch for the 1-0 edge.
- Trinity capitalized on a passed ball during its half of the inning, as Courtney Erickson touched home to knot the game 1-1.
- The Cardinals added a run in the next inning when a single to right field by Courtney Collins-Pisano drove in Kendall Carr, making it 2-1.
- Wesleyan cracked the game open in the top of the third. With runners on first and third, a sacrifice fly by Lauren Gaffney-Gomez drove in Sciarappa, before Carr tripled to left center to bring home Marina Williams. Later, Carr scored on a single by Olivia Gorman, extending the advantage to 5-1.
- The Bantams cut the deficit to one (5-4) in the bottom of the fourth. Gillian Birk crossed home on a double by Cassidy Schiff, before a single by Maura Keary brought home Schiff and Nicole Towner.
- Wesleyan responded in its next at-bat, scoring six runs on five hits. Gaffney-Gomez, Carr and Kendall Mancuso singled to load the bases, before Gaffney-Gomez scored when Gorman walked. A single by Collins-Pisano drove in Carr, before two-straight walks allowed Mancuso and Gorman to cross home. Later, Williams doubled to right field to drive in Rinaldi and Maddie Ikeda, making it 11-4.
- Trinity made some noise in its half of the inning when Towner hit a two-run double to make it 11-6, but that was as close as the Bantams would get.
GAME 1 - INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Rinaldi earned the win for Wesleyan, allowing four runs on five hits, while striking out three over three innings.
- Carr went a perfect 4-4 including a triple and an RBI, while Gorman and Williams went 2-3 with a pair of RBI's each.
- For Trinity, Madeline Spencerorel suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits over five innings of work.
- Jenna Thomas and Hannah Zukowski went 2-4, while Keary and Towner each recorded two RBI's.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With the bases loaded, Williams singled to drive home Gorman, before a sacrifice fly by Gaffney-Gomez brought home Rinaldi.
- Wesleyan doubled its lead the top of the fifth when Williams hit a single to drive in Ikeda, before later touching home on a triple by Gaffney-Gomez to make it 4-0.
- The Bantams answered in their half of the inning when a single by Keary brought home Kaitlyn DeCapua, before Keary later scored on a single by Erickson, cutting the deficit in half (4-2).
- Trinity took the lead in the bottom of the sixth and never looked back. Schiff started things off by scoring on a wild pitch, before a double by Gillian Birk scored Alex Chambers to tie the game at 4-4. Later, with two outs, Samantha Witmer and Keary came up with two-out, run-scoring singles to give the hosts a 6-4 lead.
- Bantam pitcher Jordan Stephen held the Cardinals scoreless in the seventh to hang on for the win.
GAME 2 – INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Rinaldi suffered the loss in relief for Wesleyan, allowing four runs on six hits.
- Gorman and Williams both went 3-4, while Williams had two RBI's. Sciarappa and Ikeda each went 2-4, while Gaffney-Gomez recorded two RBI's.
- Stephan picked up the win for Trinity, allowing four runs on 12 hits, while striking out five over seven innings.
- Erickson went 3-4 with an RBI, Witmer was 2-3 with an RBI and Keary went 2-4 with two RBI's.
