MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's soccer team (1-0-1) used a pair of first-half goals to propel themselves past Springfield (1-4-1). The Cardinals held a 12-5 edge in shots and a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks during the shutout.
"Today was a great team effort," stated head coach Geoff Wheeler. "The seniors started it off opening the scoring, followed by a first-year player. Despite letting the beginning of the second half get away from us a little bit, I thought we finished the game very strong. I think we all recognize that we will need to raise our level of play when we entertain the Ephs on Saturday."
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Wesleyan's Lucas Kimball looked to open the scoring at the 2:58 mark when he one-timed a cross by Jake Lundberg, but his shot sailed just high.
- The Pride had a great chance to get on the board 12:51 into the game, but Joseph Olayneck's header attempt went just wide as the match remained scoreless.
- The Cardinals cracked open the game at the 26:18 mark after a foul just outside of the 18. Springfield goalkeeper Qasim El-Ashkar dove to his right to deny the free kick by Cameron Park, but Park's hard shot slipped past El-Ashkar for the 1-0 edge.
- Wesleyan doubled its advantage at the 35:49 mark when first-year Matthew Rubenstein connected with a through ball from Jack Wolf, finding the bottom right of the goal for his first career tally.
- The hosts had a good chance to add a third goal with just 53 seconds remaining in the half, but Springfield's El-Ashkar punched Tucker Kelsch's shot over the top of the net.
- The Pride looked to cut the deficit at the 73:36 mark when Jack Rosenberg sent a corner into the box, but Wesleyan goaltender Liam Devanny came charging off his line to deny any shots.

- Devanny earned his first career win in goal, making two saves to preserve the shutout.
