BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Alec Haas scored 2:18 into overtime to lift the Wesleyan men's soccer team past Emerson 1-0 on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 2-1-1, while the Lions fall to 1-4-1.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Mike Gallo looked to get Wesleyan on the board just 4:35 in, but his header shot sailed high.
- The Cardinals outshot the Lions 5-2 in the opening stanza, but were unable to capitalize on any chances as the teams entered the intermission in a scoreless draw.
- Out of the break, Emerson's Gavin Faucette had a chance to open the scoring, but Wesleyan goaltender Liam Devanny denied the opportunity at the 48:36 mark.
- First-year Matthew Rubinstein looked to tally a goal at the 61:08 mark when he connected with a corner by Cameron Park, but Emerson goalie David Kemp thwarted the chance.
- At the 75:39 mark, the Cardinals had a good look to break open the game. Trevor Devanny connected with Jack Wolf's corner, but the shot sailed just high as the contest remained scoreless.
- With time winding down, Emerson had a final chance to end the contest in regulation, but Devanny got his fingertips on Clark Dean's shot at the 88:38 mark, tipping it over the crossbar to force the game into overtime.
- The game-winner came just 2:18 into the extra session. Rubinstein found himself sprinting towards the end line to keep a loose ball in play, one-timing it to Haas who chipped the ball over Kemp's head for the 1-0 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Devanny made three saves to pick up the shutout victory for Wesleyan, while Kemp recorded five stops in goal for Emerson.
- The Cardinals held a 10-5 shots advantage during the victory.
