Cardinals Top Warriors 4-0 in Season Opener

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan field hockey team opened its 2019 campaign with a 4-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday evening. Amy Schaap and Diana Schwarz each scored a pair of goals, while the Cardinals held a 34-1 advantage in shots over the Warriors. 

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Wesleyan opened the scoring 6:59 into the first quarter when Schaap connected with a pass from Grace Kohn, finding the bottom right of the cage to make it 1-0.
  • The Cardinals looked to increase the lead at the 8:29 mark, but Leah Ewers' hard shot hit the right post and ricocheted out of bounds.  
  • Schwarz tallied her first career goal 11:29 in when she redirected an initial shot by Nikki Gerjarusak to put Wesleyan up 2-0.
  • Schaap scored her second goal of the game at the 17:34 mark, using a reverse chip to make it 3-0.
  • The Warriors looked to get on the board with 40 seconds remaining in the first half, but Khiara Valentine's tip-in from Sydney Hogan went just wide left.   

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Schwarz struck again for the Cardinals, making it 4-0 at the 38:47 mark. The ball popped up after a scramble in front of the cage, before Schwarz swatted it out of the air to tally her second career goal.
  • Wesleyan's Erica Horowitz looked to increase the lead at the 52:10 mark, but her hard shot from the top of the arc was denied by Eastern goalie Keira Integlia.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Delaney Wood was forced to make zero saves during the contest, while Warrior's Integlia stopped 14 shots.
  • Wesleyan held a 14-0 advantage in penalty corners.

UP NEXT:

  • The Cardinals entertain Middlebury on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in their conference opener, before they travel to Wheaton on September 10th for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
