MEDFORD, Mass. – The Wesleyan women's basketball team opened its NESCAC schedule on the road against No. 1 Tufts on Friday night and lost, 78-60. The Cardinals outscored the Jumbos 19-15 in the third quarter and trailed by eight with 10 minutes to play before the home team pulled away.
Four players scored in double-figures for Wesleyan as Marina Petruzzi led the way with 12 points. With the loss, the Cardinals are now 8-4 overall and 0-1 in league play. Erica DeCandido led all players with 28 points as Tufts improved to 13-0 and 1-0.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:
- Wesleyan came out strong and held a lead for much of the first quarter.
- With 4:24 on the clock, Caleigh Ryan hit one from deep and Emma Roush scored seconds later as the visitors took a 13-10 lead.
- However, Tufts closed out the quarter on an 11-3 run to lead 21-16 after one.
- With 5:33 left in the half, a jumper by Sadie Otley put the home team ahead by 10.
- The home team extended the lead to 14 with 1:20 remaining before Petruzzi hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds. But with time expiring, a layup from Molly Ryan with :05 on the clock gave Tufts a 43-30 halftime advantage.
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Jumbos scored the first four points of the second half to go up by 17.
- Wesleyan didn't back down and with 1:13 on the clock, Heidi Scarth got the Cardinals within single-digits as they trailed 56-47. She would then hit a buzzer-beater to keep it a nine-point margin heading into the fourth.
- The deficit proved to be too much, however, and Tufts increased its lead in the final minutes en route to the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Maddie Clark, Katy O'Connor, and Ryan all scored 11 points for Wesleyan. Ryan corralled a team-high eight rebounds and Ava Tompkins dished out a game-high four assists.
- Molly Ryan scored 17 points for Tufts and Emily Briggs added 15. DeCandido recorded a double-double as she pulled in 10 rebounds as well.
- The Cardinals shot 90.9% (10-11) from the free-throw line.
