WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Wesleyan men's hockey team (6-4-0, 2-3-0) fell 4-2 at No. 13 Williams on Friday evening. The Cardinals mounted a comeback in the final frame, cutting their three-goal deficit to just one (3-2), but the Ephs (8-3-0, 6-1-0) tallied an empty netter with 38 seconds remaining to solidify the victory.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- After a scoreless first period, Williams came out of the intermission strong. The Ephs opened the scoring with 7:01 elapsed when Nick Altmann one-timed a backhanded pass from Bobby Beniers for the 1-0 edge.
- The Ephs made it 2-0 just 32 seconds later. An initial shot by Jack Forrest was denied by Wesleyan goaltender Tim Sestak, but Max Fuld was there to one-time the puck into the net.
- Williams increased the lead to 3-0 at the 11:14 mark. Nick VanBelle sent a pass from behind the goal to Niko Karamanis in the slot, before Karamanis one-timed the puck from the doorstep.
- Wesleyan responded with just 1:16 expired in the final period when Emmett Powell found the back of the goal during a power play.
- The Cardinals cut the deficit to one (3-2) with 1:38 remaining when Cam Peritz netted his fifth goal of the year, but it was not enough as Williams tallied an empty netter with 38 seconds remaining for the 4-2 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sestak suffered the loss, making 27 saves in 57:15 of action.
- Eph goaltender Cosimo Lazzarino earned the win with 20 stops.
