Cardinals Dropped by No. 4 Amherst on the Road, 67-50

AMHERST, Mass. – Caleigh Ryan dropped 21 points but the Wesleyan women's basketball team lost to No. 4 Amherst on the road Tuesday night, 67-50. The Little Three contest did not count towards the NESCAC standings.

With the loss, the Cardinals are now 8-6 overall. The Mammoths, who were led by Hannah Fox's 23 points, improved to 14-1 on the year.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The game was tied at 2-2 until the 5:17 mark of the first quarter when Fox hit a jumper from behind-the-arc.
  • Ryan answered with a three of her own to even the score but the home team closed out the quarter on an 11-4 run.
  • Amherst scored seven unanswered early in the second to go ahead 23-11.
  • The home team started to pull away and led 36-22 at halftime.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Amherst continued to extend its lead in the second half and went on an 11-0 run to essentially put the game out of reach as the Mammoths went up 53-26 with 1:41 left in the third.
  • Wesleyan scored five unanswered to make it a 53-31 lead entering the fourth quarter.
  • The Cardinals outscored Amherst 19-14 in the final 10 minutes of action but the deficit was too large to overcome.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Ryan was the lone Cardinal in double-figures. Maddie Clark scored seven and grabbed eight rebounds, and Katy O'Connor led all players with 10 boards.
  • Madeline Eck and Cam Hendricks dropped 14 and 13 points, respectively. Maggie Shipley led the Mammoths with seven rebounds and Fox dished out a game-high four assists while recording five steals.

UP NEXT:

  • Wesleyan is back in action on Friday, January 17 and will host Trinity at 7 p.m.
