Women's Hockey Downs Manhattanville 5-3

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan women's hockey team (6-3-0) came from behind to down Manhattanville 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon. The Valiants (6-5-2) took a 3-1 lead in the first period, but the Cardinals scored four-straight goals to solidify the victory. 

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Manhattanville opened the scoring with 10:15 expired when Holly Meredith collected a loose puck, before burying it into the back of the net from the top of the right faceoff circle.
  • Just 39 seconds later, after a scramble in front of the goal, Manhattanville made it 2-0 during a power play.
  • Wesleyan responded at the 15:36 mark during a four-on-three situation when Bridget Cornell found the back of the goal to cut the deficit to on (2-1).
  • Manhattanville answered just 24 seconds later when Janet Xu tucked the puck inside the right pipe for the 3-1 advantage heading into the intermission.
  • Out of the break, Wesleyan quickly found its rhythm. Audrey McMahon worked the puck around the back of the goal before taking a shot from the doorstep 4:33 into the second. Her shot was initially blocked by a Valiant defender, but the deflection went over the head of the defender and into the net for McMahon's team-leading ninth of the season.
  • Cardinal Allie Damren found the equalizer with a wrister from the slot with 10:42 expired, knotting the game 3-3.
  • Wesleyan took a 4-3 lead with 11:36 expired in the third period. Caroline Seibold collected a loose puck and sent a pass to Sarah Takahashi, before Takahashi lifted the puck over Manhattanville goaltender Lena Flores for the one-goal edge.
  • The Cardinals solidified the 5-3 victory at the 13:13 mark when Jori Balsam one-timed a pass from behind the net for her first career tally.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sam Smith made 13 saves to earn the win for Wesleyan, while Flores stopped 28 shots faced in 58:22 of play for the Valiants.
  • The Cardinals held an advantage in shots (33-13) and faceoffs (38-20).
  • Wesleyan's McMahon is now tied for first in the NESCAC in goal scoring with nine, as she has tallied at least one goal in six-straight contests.

UP NEXT:

  • The Cardinals resume conference play this weekend in a two-game home stand with Colby. The teams will play at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
