AMHERST, Mass. – The Wesleyan University women's hockey team lost a difficult NESCAC matchup on the road Friday night to Little Three rival Amherst, 2-0.
With the loss, the Cardinals falls to 6-10-1 overall and 0-8-1 in the NESCAC, while Amherst improves to 10-4-4 on the season and 5-3-3 in league play. The sides return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Mammoths' 8th annual Pink in the Rink game at Orr Rink. Opening faceoff is slated for 3 p.m.
Capitalizing on a power play opportunity with 15:24 on the clock after a high-sticking call against the visitors, Kate Pohl netted her seventh score of the season with assists from Carley Daly and Elizabeth Holubiak. Using some tic-tac passing in the slot after a blocked shot, Daley hit Pohl alone on the right hash marks before the forward ripped a wrister into the top corner.
Kenzie MacDonald tallied a final insurance dagger for the home team with 43 seconds remaining in regulation, sending the puck into an empty net to lift the Mammoths to the 2-0 victory.
In between the pipes, Caitlin Walker (9-4-4) registered 11 saves in the win for Amherst, while Allegra Grant (2-8-1) made 31 stops in the losing effort for the Cardinals.
