Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women's Hockey Edged by Amherst, 1-0

AMHERST, Mass. – Wesleyan goaltender Sam Smith made 41 saves on Saturday afternoon but the women's ice hockey team lost to Little Three rival Amherst on the road, 1-0.

With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 6-11-1 overall and 0-9-1 in the NESCAC. Amherst improves to 11-4-4 and 6-3-3.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Both sides put together scoring chances in the opening period, with the Mammoths peppering the Smith with 21 shots and Wesleyan getting solid looks with their eight shots on frame.
  • The visitor's best opportunity in the first stanza came from Brooke Keough at the 15:39 mark after a faceoff win in Mammoths' territory set up Keough alone in the high slot. Ripping a shot on target, the Amherst keeper proved up to the task as she got her blocker on the attempt.
  • For the home team, Mia DelRosso and Kate Pohl each nearly got the Mammoths on the board, but Smith made highlight-reel stops on DelRosso's bouncing shot through traffic from the point and on Pohl's backhander aimed from the top corner from point-blank range.
  • Breaking through with 15:55 remaining in regulation, Carely Daly capitalized on a Cardinals interference penalty with assists from Jillian Mazzocca and Leslie Schwartz. Working the puck around the zone, Mazzocca one-timed a dish from Schwartz towards the target that was redirected by Daly through the five-hole.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Smith recorded 41 saves in the losing effort and is now 0-2-0 on the year.
  • Caitlin Walker recorded the shutout between the posts for the Mammoths as she improved to 10-4-4.
  • Amherst held a decisive 42-18 advantage in shots and a slight 30-25 edge in faceoffs.
  • Wesleyan was 0-for-2 on power plays while the Mammoths went 1-for-3.
