Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Swept in Season Opener at Eastern Conn. St.

MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Wesleyan softball team was swept on the road by Eastern Connecticut State in the Cardinals' first games of the 2020 season. Wesleyan dropped game one of the doubleheader, 7-2, and lost a 13-2 decision in game two.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (Eastern Conn. St. 7, Wesleyan 2):

  • The Cardinals (0-2) had their hands full with the reigning Little East Champion and NCAA National Semifinalist Warriors (2-0) but Wesleyan was able to hang tough, trailing by just three in the sixth inning until a two-run sixth for Eastern Conn. St. put the margin back up to five.
  • The Warriors broke through with back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead and added an RBI single from Alysssa Vilchez in the second to put out in front 3-0.
  • Freshman Olivia Adams knocked in the first run of the season for Wesleyan as she connected for a two-out, solo home run that lowered the deficit to 3-1.
  • Lauren Gaffney-Gomez, who threw all six innings for the Cardinals, managed to get out of major trouble in the third inning. After allowing an RBI double from Megan Hodgdon, Gaffney-Gomez faced two runners on-base with one out and induced two straight groundouts to end the inning with no further damage.
  • After the Warriors took advantage of an error to make it 5-1, Kendall Mancuso drove in Marina Williams from second as the RBI single up the middle lowered the deficit back down to three.
  • Julia SanGiovanni came up with a big two-run double in the sixth as the Warriors pushed their lead from three runs up to five heading into the seventh. Courtney Collins-Pisano drove a double to left center but that was the lone baserunner for the Cardinals in the inning as the game ended in a 7-2 Warriors win.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (Eastern Conn. St. 13, Wesleyan 2 – 5 Innings):

  • Wesleyan was able to get on the board first in game two, loading the bases and knocking in a pair of runs as Marina Williams and Sophia Sciarappa each tallied RBI singles to put the Cardinals ahead 2-0.
  • After keeping the Warriors at-bay for the first two innings, the Warriors took complete control with a 12-run third inning. Eastern Conn. St. batted around twice in the inning, as the Warriors had 10 hits including Brooke Matyasovsky starting with an RBI double, SanGiovanni singling home two runs, Vilchez came through with a two-run single, Matyasovsky had a two-run double in the same inning and Brooke Gottshall finished with an RBI single.
  • Eastern Conn. St. tacked on one more run in the fourth as Jacky Arndt posted a run-scoring double to right center to complete the 13-2 five inning victory.
