Softball Sweeps Doubleheader, Taking Two from Lasell

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan softball team (2-2) bounced back in a big way, picking up a pair of wins over Lasell (0-2) at home on Thursday. The Cardinals were victorious 8-0 in game one before taking the second contest by a score of 9-3. Both games were decided in five innings, the first game by mercy rule and the second due to darkness. Wesleyan moves to 6-1 all-time against Lasell, winning five straight in the series.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (WESLEYAN 8, LASELL 0 – 5 Innings)

  • Wesleyan's game one starter Lauren Gaffney-Gomez worked her way out of a jam in the first inning as the Lasers had two runners on with one out and later had the bases loaded with two outs, only to come away with no runs as Gaffney-Gomez induced a groundout to short to end the threat.
  • Inducing that out to escape the first helped the Cardinals grab early momentum which translated to a four-run bottom of the first. Gaffney-Gomez was at it again, helping her own caused with an RBI single up the middle to score Courtney Collins-Pisano from second. Kendall Carr lofted an RBI double to left center field that scored another and Marina Williams lofted a run-scoring single to right that made it 3-0 Cardinals. Kendall Mancuso completed the scoring with a double that scored Sophia Sciarappa from second as Wesleyan made it 4-0 after one.
  • Two more runs came in the bottom of the third as Carr turned on the jets, legging out a leadoff triple to right center, and later came home on a Williams triple to deep right center field. Sciarappa followed with a third straight extra-base hit for Wesleyan, this time an RBI double to center field that made it 6-0 Cardinals.
  • Gaffney-Gomez continued to mow down the Lasell lineup, inducing a pop up to start the fourth inning which gave her eight consecutive recorded outs before a single from Bethany Hector broke the streak. No damage was done, however, as the Lasers were held to a pair of groundouts that finished the inning.
  • The Wesleyan lead grew to eight in the fourth as Olivia Adams drove home a run with a bunt single that Collins-Pasino scored on to make it 7-0. After Adams stole second, Gaffney-Gomez drove in her second run of the day with a double to left center as the Cardinals suddenly led 8-0.
  • In the Lasers' last at-bats in the fifth, Gaffney-Gomez struck out the first two batters of the inning before a fly out to Adams in center finished off the Wesleyan victory in five innings of play.

GAME 1 – INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Gaffney-Gomez picked up the win with the five-inning, complete game shutout as she struck out five, with no walks and four hits allowed. At the plate, she went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (WESLEYAN 9, LASELL 3 – 5 Innings (Due to Darkness))

  • Freshman Brooklin Williams took to the circle to start game two for the Cardinals and she limited damage after a one-out double, striking out the next batter before an inning-ending groundout to first saw no runs come across for Lasell after one.
  • Lasell worked their way into the lead as Hector was hit by a hit, Julie Macmillan sacrificed her over to second where Bella Richard knocked her home with a run-scoring single to center.

Sciarappa had a leadoff infield single to start the inning and Mancuso followed, reaching first on an error after a bunt was laid down. On that play, the second baseman covering first dropped the throw down the line and with Sciarappa rounding third, she was able to beat the throw home to score all the way from first on the way.
  • That hustle from Sciarappa loomed large as the Cardinals piled it on with Revi Brown singling home two through the right side that made it 3-1. After Collins-Pisano singled through to third base, Adams singled to center that scored Brown from third. Later, Williams crushed a triple to left center field that scored a pair and she was then driven in by Sciarappa on a single to left that put Wesleyan out in front, 7-1, after two.
  • Lasell answered back with two runs in the third, both scoring on the same play as a wild pitch led to two runners coming home to score and made it 7-3 Cardinals.
  • Maddie Ikeda led off with a triple to right center to start the bottom of the third and then she scored as Collins-Pisano continued her strong effort on the evening with a run-scoring single back up the middle, making it 8-3 Wesleyan.
  • Danielle Rinaldi came on for Brooklin Williams in the circle to start the fourth and she had a one-two-three first inning of work with the final two outs coming on strikeouts.
