NEW LONDON, Conn. – A strong second half performance by the No. 10 Wesleyan men's lacrosse team propels the Cardinals to a 17-7 win at Coast Guard on Wednesday night.
With a 5-2 lead at halftime, Wesleyan scored six goals in both the third and fourth quarters to outscore the Bears 12-5 in the final 30 minutes of action. Jake Sexton led all scorers with seven points on five goals and two assists as the Cardinals improved to 2-0. Ryan Gochar totaled a team-high three points (2g, 1a) for Coast Guard as it dropped to 2-3 on the year.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- It took just eight seconds for Wesleyan to get on the board as Zach Zavalick won the opening faceoff before firing a shot into the back of the net.
- Fifth-two seconds later, the visitors added another goal as Logan Geller assisted on a Tom Martello tally, and less than three minutes after that, the Cardinals increased their lead to three at the 11:14 mark as Sexton scored his first of the game.
- With only one second remaining in the first quarter, Will Iorio found the back of the net to put the home team on the board.
- Coast Guard scored the first goal of the second quarter to cut the deficit to one, but the Cardinals closed out the half on a 2-0 run.
- It was all Wesleyan in the second half as the visitors opened on a 5-0 stretch and never looked back.
- Gochar snapped the Cardinals' run but with three seconds left in the third quarter, Sean Penney found the back of the net to give Wesleyan an 11-3 lead entering the fourth.
- The Cardinals scored three unanswered from the 9:51-to-6:51 mark, extending the lead to 11 and essentially putting the game out of reach.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wesleyan outshot Coast Guard 42-36 and went 1-for-4 on man-up opportunities while the Bears were 0-for-3. The Cardinals also held a 34-25 edge in ground balls.
- Otto Bohan played just over 54 minutes between the posts and made seven saves for the win.
- Charles McAllister stopped 12 shots for Coast Guard.
