Women's Soccer Nets Late Goal to Defeat Trinity 2-1
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The No.18 ranked Wesleyan women's soccer team got back to their winning ways Tuesday afternoon as they took down Trinity at Jackson Field. It was a tough test for the Cardinals, needing a goal by
Grace Devanny '23 in the 83
rd minute to seal the victory. Wesleyan picks up a big conference win to move to 7-1 (5-1 NESCAC) while Trinity drops under .500 in league play at 2-3-1 (6-4-1 overall).
HIGHLIGHTS:
- It looked like it was going to be smooth sailing for the Cardinals as less than three minutes into the match they put one in the net. Devanny tried to rip a one-timer off the cross to the middle but didn't connect. She then regathered herself and put the Cardinals up 1-0
- Tori Simas' 74th minute equalizer silenced the Jackson Field spectators, and it seemed as though the Bantams had the momentum going into the end of the game
- Devanny played hero in the 83rd minute though as her shot trickled by the goalkeeper, breaking the tie and securing her 2nd goal of the contest
- Trinity wouldn't go out quietly as they were able to manage two shots and a corner all in the final minute and a half. One of those shots by Colleen Lux sounded like a cannon off the crossbar, however, the Cardinals' defense held strong
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- With Devanny's two goal performance Tuesday afternoon she now leads the Cardinals in: goals, assists, points, and shots
- Sarah Hammond '22 made four saves on the night leading to her 7th victory of the year
- The Cardinals were able to defeat the Bantams for the first time since 2013. They were previously 0-5-1 over the past 8 years against their conference foes.
- Devanny has scored a game winning goal in half of Wesleyan's matches this year. She tops the NESCAC in that statistic with four total game winners.
