Box Score ROME, Ga. – Fresh off their recent trip to the doubles finals at the ITA New England Regional two weeks ago,
Sasha Gaeth '23 and
Kristina Yu '22 of the Wesleyan women's tennis continued to shine in their first season as doubles partners, rolling to the semifinal round of the ITA Cup. Both Gaeth and Yu earned All-American honors. For Gaeth, this is the first All-American honor of her career while adds another notch to her impressive career resume as this is her third All-American award (all in doubles).
Coming into the prestigious doubles tournament unseeded, Gaeth and Yu made quick work of their opening round match against Arianna Castellanos and Angel Le of Whitman as the Cardinal duo advanced in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Next up was a stiff test in the No. 1 seed team from Carnegie Mellon – Lindy Cornwall and Bin Zheng. Even with the challenge facing the Cardinals in this match, Gaeth and Yu weren't fazed by the ranking and topped the No. 1 seeded team 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets to advance to the semifinal found.
Another impressive tournament run was nearly extended to the ITA Cup finals as Gaeth and Yu took the first set over Shianna Guo and Sylwia Mikos of the Univ. of Chicago 6-4. The second set was a battle that extended into a tiebreak, ultimately won by Guo/Mikos 7-6 (7-4). In the decisive third set tiebreak, it was the Chicago team taking another close 10-7 decision that put an end to the Wesleyan run.
Gaeth and Yu will return when the Cardinals open dual match play in the spring starting with a trip down to Orlando for spring break matches starting with Christopher Newport on Monday, March 7.
