Men’s Soccer Falls to No. 25 Conn. College, 1-0

Wesleyan heads into the NESCAC tournament as the #5 seed

MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Wesleyan men's soccer team was defeated by No. 25 nationally-ranked Connecticut College on Tuesday night at Citrin Field, 1-0. With the win the Camels move to 13-3 (9-2 NESCAC) and clinch the regular season conference title. The Cardinals fail to score a goal for the first time this year, dropping to 5-3-2 in the NESCAC and 10-3-2 overall. Wesleyan will be the #5 seed in the NESCAC tournament and travel to Middlebury to play the Panthers in the conference quarterfinals.
 
HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The first 25 minutes of the match was a defensive battle, with the two teams constantly alternating possessions on the soaked Citrin Field. They combined for zero shots, and only two corner kicks
  • Conn. College finally broke through in the 41st minute. Luke Cibelli fired a shot on goal from the right wing, which was deflected into the air by Liam Devanny '23. It was then headed to the far post by Dylan Zane and onto the right foot of Jake Creus for the goal
  • Wesleyan created some scoring chances in the second half, the best of which came in the 48th minute. Lucas Ruehlemann '25 ripped a shot towards the bottom left corner of the goal but was turned away. Seconds later Dane Harmaty '24 followed up with a shot himself, once again denied by Sam Maidenberg
  • The Cardinals kept applying pressure but were unable to produce the equalizer on their seven second half shots. Max Hofstetter '24 had the last of those shots, which sailed over the crossbar in the 87th minute
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Wesleyan out shot Connecticut College 10-4 (7-3 shots on target)
  • This marks the first game of the year that Wesleyan has not scored a goal 
UP NEXT:
Wesleyan ends the regular season and moves into NESCAC tournament play. They earned the #5 seed in the conference, meaning they will travel to play the 4 seed Middlebury Panthers on Saturday.
