No. 13 Women’s Soccer Produces a Late Goal, Ties Conn. College 1-1

Cardinals' draw earns them the #2 seed in the NESCAC Tournament

MIDDLETOWN, CT - The 13th ranked Wesleyan women's soccer team was able to salvage a draw Tuesday afternoon against a tough Connecticut College team, 1-1. This marks the final regular season game of the year for the Cardinals, who hope to carry their strong finish to the regular season with them into the NESCAC Tournament starting this weekend. Their 8-1-1 mark to finish conference play is the best single-season NESCAC record for Wesleyan in program history while the Cardinals head into the postseason having recorded their best regular season (12-1-1 record) in program history. With the tie, Conn. College moves to 9-3-3 (5-3-2 NESCAC), earning them the fifth-best record in the conference.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The weather heavily influenced how the game was played, as with a regular season conference title on the line both teams had to suffer through swirling winds and heavy freezing rain throughout the 110-minute contest
  • Despite the weather conditions both offenses provided multiple scoring opportunities on their way to 16 total shots in the first 45 minutes of play. Audrey Lavey '23 and Conn. College's Mya Johnson traded opportunities back and forth, combining for seven shots (four shots on-target) by themselves
  • The Camels' Hannah Boldt nearly broke the tie in the dying minutes of the first half with a shot towards the top left corner of the net, but was turned away by Sarah Hammond '22 for her third save of the afternoon
  • Conn. College came out the aggressor in the second half, manufacturing three shots in the first 10 minutes of the half all of which were controlled by Hammond
  • Grace Devanny '23 put the pressure on the Camels' defense with two shots in the 69th minute, the later being a shot on goal that was once again turned away by Sarah Hall
  • A Wesleyan foul with 15 minutes remaining gave the Camels another opportunity. Marielle McEnaney took the free kick, which bounced off a Camel head in the box and into the waiting feet of Mya Johnson who put through the first goal of the game
  • The Cardinals then went to work, moving the ball down the sideline. After a Camel defender cleared it out of bounds, Julia Meehan '22 took the throw in and sent it towards Devanny. Devanny headed the ball past the oncoming defender before sending a cross to the far post connecting with Lavey, who put through the equalizer in the 76th minute
  • The two overtime periods only saw five total shots, with none of them on target. The last chance came from Meehan who was able to get off a shot in the final minute which sailed over the crossbar
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Hammond tied a career-high with eight saves
  • Wesleyan has now produced 59 shots in their last two games (20 on target)
  • Lavey puts through her seventh goal of the season, placing her second on the team
  • Grace Devanny adds another assist to her NESCAC-leading nine on the season
