Women’s Tennis Makes Doubles Final, Renna Mohsen-Breen Wins Singles B Draw at ITA New England Regionals

BRUNSWICK, Me. – The Wesleyan women's tennis team traveled to Bowdoin for the three-day ITA New England Regional tournament and had a strong showing in all three draws. Sasha Gaeth '23 and Kristina Yu '22 shined in the doubles draw, advancing to the finals, while Reena Mohsen-Breen '25 rattled off five straight wins to take home the title in the singles B draw.

Gaeth and Yu's run in the doubles tournament all the way to the final, in their first time competing as a team together, was quite impressive as the tandem defeated Melinda Alviar/Michelle Shen from Wellesley 8-1 in the round of 32 and easily topped Yuu Ishikawa/Jenny Tian of Williams 8-1 to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday. The tandem continued to mow through teams as they defeated Brinlea LaBarge/Amy Delman of Middlebury 8-4 and followed with an 8-4 semifinal win over Kennedi Carter/Evelyn Safar from Bowdoin to make it to the finals on Sunday. Facing Tufts' top team of Elle Christensen/Tilly Rigby, the Jumbos came out on top with a 6-4, 6-4 win.

In singles action, Mohsen-Breen was the star of the weekend as she won five straight matches in the singles B draw to win the title in a thrilling final match with Lizzy Yu of Bowdoin. Mohsen-Breen took the first set 6-2 but saw Yu roar back and take the second set 6-1, signaling the first set Mohsen-Breen had lost all weekend. In a third set tiebreak, Mohsen-Breen battled and came away with a 10-7 win to take the singles B title. That win capped an incredible run that saw the Cardinal first-year win in straight sets in the round of 16, quarterfinal and semifinal action as she dropped just 14 games over six combined sets.

Gaeth's weekend also featured a run in the singles B draw as she started with a tiebreak win over Sydney Landau of Colby 8-7 (7-1) that set her up for an extended run as she defeated Jane Wang of Babson 8-0 in the round of 32, dominated Anna Murphy of MIT 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 16 and defeated Michelle Shub of Tufts 6-4, 6-4 to earn a semifinal trip. However, the run came to an end as Gaeth was forced to withdraw in a walkover as her run to the doubles draw final overlapped with what would have been her semifinal singles match against Yu of Bowdoin.

In the main singles A draw, Wesleyan saw two players make quarterfinal runs as Caitlyn Ferrante '23 won her first three matches before dropping a three-set match to Claudia Miller of Middlebury 6-3, 2-6, 6-10 in the quarterfinals. Katie Fleischman '23 had a similar weekend as she posted wins over Shweta Cavale (Mount Holyoke), Ana Hatfield (Brandeis) and Amy Delman (Middlebury) before bowing out with a very tight 0-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-12 decision to Kim Liao of MIT in the quarterfinals.

Serim Jin '23 and Caitlin Goldberg '23 picked up two doubles wins, defeating Annissa Amoum/Vy Hoang of Mount Holyoke 8-1 and Liao/Sarah Pertsemlidis of MIT 8-7 (7-5) to make it to the round of 16. Ferrante and Venia Yeung '22 also competed in doubles, winning their round of 32 match before suffering a round of 16 defeat that went into a tiebreak, 7-8 (3-7), to Kennedi Carter/Evelyn Safar of Bowdoin.

Wesleyan's final competition of the fall season is slated for this weekend as the Cardinals travel to the NEWITT Tournament hosted by Smith and Mount Holyoke from Oct. 8-10.
