MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan field hockey lost a thriller Saturday morning as they went toe-to-toe with nationally ranked Amherst, falling in double overtime. The 3-2 loss puts the Cardinals at 4-6 (1-5 NESCAC), while the Mammoths move to 8-2 (4-2).
HIGHLIGHTS:
- The scoring opened up early in the second period as Wesleyan's Kenzie Kelly '25 scored her second goal of the season as Diana Schwarz '23 drove in on several Mammoth defenders, getting a shot on-net which deflected to Kelly at the opposite post
- The Mammoths responded quickly, as less than a minute later they came down and tied the game up at 1-1. The goal by Abbey Lays was orchestrated by Beth Williamson who got credit for the assist on the penalty corner
- The Mammoths struck again later in the second quarter when Williamson ripped one from the edge of the circle off a penalty corner taken by Muffie Mazambani
- Amherst put on a ton of pressure in the third quarter, but Caitlin Grant '22 was able to fend them off. She totaled four saves for the quarter, including two point blank saves in a row with just over 5 minutes left. Melanie Lim '24 and Olivia Baglieri '22 each made incredible defensive saves in the frame to keep the score within one
- Helen Deretchin '25 played hero in the final minutes for the Cardinals as she lofted an incredible shot over the Mammoth GK and an outstretched stick from a Amherst defender, going bar-down as the Cardinal bench erupted
- Wesleyan had consecutive corners with no time showing in the first overtime, but the Amherst defense held strong to send the game into a second overtime
- Amherst broke through early in the second overtime as Sam Maynard carried in deep, back passed to Natalie Hobbs who fired on-goal that found the back of the cage
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wesleyan emptied their bench, playing seven subs while Amherst's started played the full 72+ minutes
- The Cardinals have now played seven of their 10 total games against nationally ranked opponents
- Amherst outshot Wesleyan 17-12, while also beating them in corners 16-9
- Dani Dittmann '22 played the entire 72:39, extending her team-leading 703 total minutes this season
NEXT UP:
Wesleyan will return home Sunday to play the Roger Williams Hawks at 1:00 PM at Smith Field. The Hawks come in at 6-4 (1-2), fresh off a win against Connecticut College earlier this week.
