MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - In the last home match of the season, the Wesleyan volleyball team lost Saturday's NESCAC and Little 3 competition against the Amherst Mammoths in a four set match. This tightly-played match throughout resulted in the Mammoths continuing a five-game win streak with set scores of 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 26-24.
The disappointing loss puts the Cardinals at 11-2 on the season and 5-2 in the NESCAC while the Mammoths go up in the standings, moving to 10-1 on the season and 5-1 in the NESCAC. As the conference slate reaches the halfway point, there are currently four teams tied atop the volleyball standings at 5-1 while Wesleyan is close behind with their 5-2 mark.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
- With the home team starting off slow in the first set, Amherst took the lead with nine kills in the first 12 points. Wesleyan fought back to take the lead at 19-17, but the momentum didn't last and the Mammoths took the set 25-20.
- Riding the high of a first set win, Amherst jumped out to an early 10-5 lead in the second set. Low errors on the side of the Mammoths made them hard to beat, but the Cardinals came back from 17-11 down to tie the set at 23-23. Unfortunately, Wesleyan couldn't finish the set and ended up losing 25-23.
- Finally finding some footing, the Cardinals got a strong lead of 18-10 with kills across the net. Impressive hustle on defense kept Wesleyan in the game for another set with a 25-20 win.
- The fourth set was a battle with both teams attacking hard at the net. In the end, the Mammoths sealed set four with 18 kills against Wesleyan's 15 to end the game with a score of 26-24.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Maddie Kurke '22 broke her career-high on senior night with 21 kills across four sets to lead the offense for Wesleyan. Two other Cardinals, Brina Kuslak '22 and Bella Ahearn '23, hit in the double digits with 12 kills and 10 kills respectively.
- Three Cardinals were in the double digits for digs with senior Jenna Otaola '22 leading the pack with an impressive 28 digs followed by Kiana Yuhl '25 and Grace Bell '23 with 18 digs and 15 digs, respectively.
- Coming off a 58-assist effort in Friday night's five-set win over Middlebury, Maya Lopansri '25 dished out 48 assists with 10 digs for back-to-back double-doubles for the first-year setter
- Leading the Mammoths in attacks was Sophie Launsbach and Jamie Dailey with 17 kills and 16 kills apiece. The two were followed by Caroline Tilton with 11 kills.
- Three Mammoths were also in the double digits for digs with Lizzie Papalia at 23, Jamie Dailey at 18, and Sierra Cox at 10.
