Women’s Soccer Wins First-Ever NCAA Tournament game, Defeating Penn St.-Behrend 1-0

Cardinals head to the round of 32 where they will face Stevens at home on Sunday at 1 PM

MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Wesleyan women's soccer kept their magical season alive with an NCAA Tournament first round win over Penn St.-Behrend, 1-0, at home on Saturday afternoon. A back-and-forth game throughout, Remi Feuerman '22 put through home deciding goal in the 49th minute to send Wesleyan home with a win. Women's soccer continues a season of firsts with both their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first win, adding yet another win victory to the best season the Cardinals have ever had. They now have a record-setting 15 wins (15-1-2) on the year and counting. Penn St.-Behrend's incredible season comes to an end with only their second loss of the year (19-2).

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The game nearly opened up with a quick goal as Audrey Lavey '23 rocketed a shot off the crossbar in the opening minute. She followed it up with two more shots in the 10th and 11th minute, but they were both off the mark
  • Wesleyan's back line prevented any easy scoring chances for the Lions in the first half. Penn St.-Behrend only had two shot attempts, with only one forcing Sarah Hammond '22 into a save
  • The final 10 minutes of the first half saw many changes of possession and no real scoring opportunities. Each team recorded only one shot each, one a dribbler right at the Lions' keeper and the other being a shot well over the head of Hammond for a goal kick.
  • The Cardinals reorganized at halftime, coming out more aggressive and under control. They put together an immediate scoring chance in the 48th minute when Grace Devanny '23 had a shot in front of the goal that was turned away by Penn St.-Behrend's Morgan Harding. Just a minute later, Feuerman put through a centering pass from the right side that was sent in by Dani Milovanov '23. The ball bounced in the box off a defender before finding the foot of Feuerman to break open the scoreless game
  • As the minutes ticked off the clock in the second half, the fans became more and more involved. A crowded Smith Field rained oo's and ah's as Grace Devanny dribbled down the right side of the field through defenders trying to find a centering pass.
  • The Lions' coach continued to urge his players that the scoring chances were going to come over the final 25 minutes, but it never really materialized. Their best scoring chance of the second half might have come in the 73rd minute when Karla Ochoa tried to beat Hammond with a shot in the bottom right corner of the goal, but was turned away
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Feuerman became the first-ever Cardinal to score in the NCAA Tournament while her goal is the first game-winner of her four-year career
  • Milovanov's assist is her third over the past four games, and fifth of the season
  • Wesleyan outshot Penn St.-Behrend 21-8 (10-4 shots on target)
  • Wesleyan wins their first NCAA tournament game in their first-ever appearance
