Women’s Hockey Opens Their Season with 4-3 OT Win Over Bowdoin

MIDDLETOWN,Conn. - The Wesleyan women's hockey team opened up the 2021-22 season with a thrilling overtime victory over fellow NESCAC member Bowdoin on Friday night. The hero in the overtime period was Effie Tournas '25, who was able to beat the goalkeeper off the assists from her teammates Audrey McMahon '22 and Ally Detre '22. The win moves Wesleyan to 1-0-0 to start the year, while Bowdoin drops to 0-1-0.
 
HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The first period saw a bit of everything. There were nine penalties, three goals and an extremely enthusiastic home crowd that watched the Cardinals take a 2-1 lead into the intermission
  • The Cardinals struck early with back-to-back goals eight minutes into the game. The first was put through by Jenna Stevens '24 off assists by Caroline Jenkins '23 and Caroline Mezias '25. After an Effie Tournas won faceoff, the Cardinals were on the attack again. This time it was Jenkins with the goal which was assisted by Tournas
  • Wesleyan had scoring opportunities in the second period off a power play, but were unable to capitalize with a goal.
  • The 3rd period started off with the Polar Bears immediately putting pressure on the Cardinals defense. They put through the equalizer 3:26 into the period thanks to Izzie Stoddard. They then won the ensuing faceoff and put through another one, this one by Peyton Mulhern
  • With only two minutes left, McMahon came through. She scored off an assist by Bridget Cornell '23 sending the game into overtime
  • In overtime it was McMahon's turn to set up her teammate, as she assisted on the game-winning goal scored by Effie Tournas. Wesleyan won 4-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • In her first official game in a Wesleyan uniform Effie Tournas produced: six shots, an assist, and the game winning goal
  • In her goalkeeping debut Rei Halloran '23 made 26 saves
  • Wesleyan had beaten Bowdoin just once in their last 43 matchups before Friday night

Wesleyan will face Bowdoin again Saturday afternoon at 3:00 PM at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.
